Roxas City dredges out flooding problems
ROXAS CITY – A city-wide dredging operation on creeks and rivers is underway to partly address the problem of siltation that contributes to the flooding problem in some areas here.
Roxas City Mayor Vicente Bermejo said during his State of the Roxas City Address (SORCA) last July that the city is prone to flooding because it is only two meters above sea level.
The silt-dredging activity is being complemented by the de-clogging operations on existing canals as well as integration of newly constructed canals to enhance natural outflow of water.
The initiative against the flooding problem supports the directive of President Gloria Macapagal – Arroyo to strictly implement all mitigating measures to prevent loss of lives especially during typhoons and calamities.
The President has continually underscored the importance of preparedness in coping with and overcoming disasters, saying “disaster mitigation should be everyone’s business.”
She said many of the risks that communities and individuals undergo can really be prevented “if we all get together and decide and plan how we will do disaster mitigation.” (PIA/A.Lumaque)
