Roxas City sets tree planting Sept. 25
ROXAS CITY – The Roxas City government will conduct a tree planting activity on September 25 here as part of its activities for the month-long Philippine Civil Service celebration this September.
The environment-related activity is a local initiative for a necessity to promote a healthier ecosystem for the residents through the rehabilitation and regreening of the environment.
“It will be participated in by some of the city government’s department heads and employees,” said Roxas City’s Human Resource Management Officer Marilyn Albaran.
The tree planting activities hinge on the notion that trees help mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide as they grow.
“Climate scientists believe that human-induced global deforestation is responsible for 18-25% of global climate change,” said a Wikipedia online reference.
The country’s campaign against climate change was recently directed to developed countries to render financial and technological assistance to poor nations.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said during the closing ceremonies of the three-day United Nations Industrial Development Organization’s (UNIDO) International Conference on Green Industry in Asia held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City last Sept 11 that developed countries should show examples in the United Nation’s target of 25 to 40 percent reduction of gas emission by the year 2020.
The conference was organized by the UNIDO, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
“We also call on them to assist developing countries to mitigate and adapt to worsening changes in climate by fulfilling treaty obligations to provide technological and financial support, including support for green industry,” the President stressed.
She also reiterated the Philippines’ commitment to fight climate change and the country will not compromise the environment for development. (PIA/A.Lumaque)
