10th ‘Piyesta sa Kakahuyan’ to be held in Calinog
Iloilo province will hold the 10th Piyesta sa Kakahuyan through planting fruit bearing trees and other endemic species in Brgy. Alibunan, Calinog municipality on September 26.
Iloilo Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) chief Soledad R. Sucaldito said that they have chosen Brgy. Alibunan in Calinog as the site of the massive tree planting activity this year because it is one of the areas where they have their regular reforestation program.
”We also have found out that there is already an encroachment by the community people who have cut some endemic trees in lieu of the coffee, corn and rice,” Sucaldito said.
She also said that Calinog Mayor Alex Centena expressed his intention to make the area where the massive tree planting will be done as an economic park.
“We are assured of the local government unit of Calinog to maintain and protect the trees which is a very important aspect in such important project,” Sucaldito said.
The PENRO chief said they have invited Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, who is an Ilonggo, and Gina Lopez of the ABS-CBN, a known environmentalist, as guest speakers for this year’s Piyesta sa Kakahuyan. (PNA)
