RES GESTAE
Moment of peace is coming
Pacquiao-versus-Cotto’s scheduled fight on November is now creating too much fuss among supporters and fanatics of both ring warriors.
Surely, this fight will go down in the Philippine history as one of “Pambansang Kamao’s most celebrated bouts. It will also be his biggest take. Pacman is expected to bring home as much as 20 million US dollars from this duel – more than enough to fuel his quest for a congressional seat in next year’s election.
While not being complacent to Pacman’s boxing prowess, I could not help believing that he would bring home the belt. He will make us proud as Filipinos once more. I bet it!
But, while victory is yet to come, one thing I could really be certain of – on that day, we will not only witness another milestone in Pacman’s boxing career; we will not only witness the unfolding of another colorful chapter in our history as Filipinos… we will also definitely have another moment of peace… a taste of a crime-free Philippines!
It has been described that the world virtually stops every time Pacman has a fight.
Or, as the Philippine National Police puts it, “zero crime rate during Pacman’s fight”.
With this, I am always tempted to say, “Tita Cory is an icon of democracy, Pacman is an emblem of peace”. It is so because criminals seem to unite with the rest of the populace the moment Pacman steps on the ring. The monitoring of the PNP could attest to this… no traffic, no robbery, not even single petty crime transpired throughout Pacman’s fights in the past.
It could be reasoned with Filipinos’ passion and love for boxing. But granting without conceding that it is, not every Filipino boxer fights the way Pacman does? And not all Pinoy boxers have caused zero crime rate in the country during their fights. Only Pacman did.
This, I contend that Pacman’s upcoming fight will surely repeat history… He will win… It will also be a moment we again live in a crime-free Philippines … even just in a fraction of an hour!
Thus, it may be foolish of me to think this one, but really, if only I got the power enough to cause Pacman and Cotto’s fight to last forever, I will willingly do so.
