Untold story behind Roxas’ renouncement
In the Philippine politics, there are things that spice up the decision of a politician and the political party. It is season with either wise move approved by the entire party or just a decision that only satisfy the few. The unprecedented renouncement of Senator Mar Roxas has a taste of bitterness and betrayal.
Roxas was forced in abandoning his presidential plan after the Hyatt 10 allegedly pressured the Liberal Party to drop him in favor of Senator Noynoy Aquino. The renowned band of Judases led by former DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman wants to capitalize on the “Cory magic” that entrapped Noynoy after his mother’s death. They prefer Aquino as the LP’s bet because of its winnability when compared to Roxas.
No wonder Roxas has a heavy heart when he made an announcement over his withdrawal from the presidential race. After spending much time and money, he has given up his long held ambition to become the president of the Philippines. Roxas felt mistreated by the party that once gave him the “go signal” to join the presidential race. Perhaps, Korina Sanchez’s uneasiness over LP’s not too rewarding handling of Roxas’ loyalty to the party had been reasonable.
Roxas has to save his face. He made it appear he has given up his ambition because of his love for the nation and wants genuine change in the next administration. A humiliation turned into honor.
On the day Roxas made his announcement, it was like a movie with bad ending. There were certain issues left hanging. Everyone wondered what position he would run then? What was clear was he transferred the torch to Noynoy.
With propriety, Noynoy did not immediately grab the challenge. After his spiritual retreat, he has accepted the call to join the presidential race. He could not be blamed for Roxas’s fate. Charge it to Soliman and the Hyatt 10 for manipulating the party’s decision.
Soliman, herself has a senatorial plan comes 2010 elections. Aside from victoriously maneuvering LP’s preference for presidential candidate, she is making sure Senator Panfilo Lacson stays afloat in the opposition through LP. It is her way of returning back the favors to Lacson.
The objective of the Hyatt 10 in uniting the opposition and coming up with a common presidential candidate against the administration and other presidential aspirants is defeated. It does not serve its purpose when they dumped Roxas in just one wink.
What more then could the Hyatt 10 and Lacson dictate the unwilling public? The public has every right to question the intents behind LP’s shuffling of candidates, especially with Soliman and Lacson’s intervention.
The call to reform as claimed by LP had been placed on Noynoy’s shoulders. The public does not argue with that. But the way Roxas was set-aside to suffice other’s self-seeking interests remains debatable. What reform could a “puppet” president do once he got himself elected? What does Soliman or Lacson have to offer for the next administration other than pretending that they “care”?
