Westbridge grabs ISSDL 17-Under
Football Festival Championship
Westbridge Football Club won the Championship of the 1st Iloilo Schools Sports Development League (ISSDL) Football Festival last September 12, 2009 at the Westbridge School football field. St. Vincent Seminary settled for second place while Angelicum School grabbed the third place. The tournament was participated by two other schools namely, Central Philippine University and Ateneo de Iloilo.
Mitch Tingson bullied his way through the St. Vincent defenses to score two goals in the first half. Irvin Terazona, Justin Celis and Miko Tirador added one goal each to humble the seminarians with a 5-0 win. Since St. Vincent was ranked first after the round robin eliminations, they have a twice to beat advantage, thus a second game was played to determine the champion. Buoyed by its big win earlier and riding on a great momentum, Tingson and Tirador did not wait long to score two successive goals that deflated the spirits of the Vincentians. Goal keeper, Christon Garin, kept the St. Vincent strikers at bay with his timely blocks and saves. He was ably assisted by three solid defenders in Celis, Tirador and Francis Inocencio.
A slow start by the Westbridge booters, 1-4 loss against St. Vincent and 3-3 draw against Angelicum School, did not dampen the spirit of the host school. They regained their composure as they thumped Ateneo de Iloilo with a 4-0 beating and blanked CPU with a 2-0 win.
ISSDL is a new sports body of Iloilo City which is composed of schools in the Iloilo City area. This is spearheaded by Mr. John U. Trompeta of Ateneo de Iloilo. The 12-Under Football Festival is slated on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at the Angelicum School Football field.
