Disaster coordinating councils hold rescue olympics
BACOLOD CITY — Defense Secretary and National Disaster Coordinating Council Chair Gilberto Teodoro Jr. is set to formally open the rescue olympics and camp evacuation management competition at the Panaad Park and Stadium today (September 23).
Teodoro who is also keynote speaker during the opening ceremonies will be joined by Deputy Presidential Spokesperson and Civil Defense Deputy Administrator Dr. Anthony Golez, Presidential Assistant for Western Visayas Dr. Raul Banias, PNP Regional Director Isagani Cuevas and local officials here.
Some 6,000 rescuers and social workers from Region 6 are expected to participate in the rescue Olympics and competition.
The competition will bring together all the provinces and highly urbanized cities in the region in delivering a harmonious demonstration of skills on a multi-level regional integrated event.
Aside from the competition, the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council will also hold its annual Gawad KALASAG Award.
The Gawad KALASAG Awards 2009 is conferred to LGUs, POs/ volunteer organizations, NGOs, schools and hospitals to recognize their exemplary achievements in the field of disaster management and humanitarian assistance. (PIA/EAD)
