Kabankalan hosts confab on WV sugar industry
Kabankalan City hosted recently the 20th Regional Conference on West Visayan History and Culture on the theme Prosperity, Fame and Adversity: The Many Faces of the Sugar Industry in Western Visayan.
This confab was jointly sponsored by the Center for West Visayas Studies, UP Visayas and City Government of Kabankalan. There were around 50 participants including the staff of CWVS, coming from Candoni, Ilog, La Castellana, Kabankalan, Antique, CPU-Iloilo, Dumangas, Ajuy, La Salle-Bacolod and UP Visayas in this two-day conference.
Among the speakers who presented their study were Ma. Cecilia-Nava,Ph.D. and Modesto Sa-onoy. Nava tackled on the issue “Sin-o ang Buki, Sin-o ang Tikalon: The Impact of the Sugar Industry on the Formation of the Negrense Worldview. Sa-onoy lectured on “The Struggle of the Planters, Millers and Workers in the Philippine Sugar Industry. Vir Gerongani of the Kabankalan tourism office gave an overview of “The Sugar Industry and its Role in the Development of Kabankalan City.”
Director Henry Funtecha of CWVS, who passed away recently, was the primemover behind moving these conferences to various places in WV since 1990.
