Loren says NPC 110% behind her VP bid
Senator Loren Legarda, who earlier announced her vice presidential bid in the 2010 election, said her party the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) is “110 percent” solidly behind her despite the surprise withdrawal from the party of Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero recently.
Legarda, who was interviewed by the media upon her arrival at the Iloilo Airport, yesterday said she was surprised of Escudero’s announcement however she respects the senator’s decision.
She said with Escudero’s withdrawal from the party, they will be meeting and consulting with their leaders on who will be their presidential candidate.
Legarda said that based on their initial talks they might leave the presidential post open depending on the decision of the party leaders and members.
Asked if their party will adopt Escudero in the event he will independently pursue his plan to run for president, Legarda refused to comment saying such matter will still be taken up by the party.
Escudero on Wednesday announced that he has resigned from the NPC, the political party of business tycoon Eduardo ‘Danding’ Cojuangco Jr., and asked for time to decide whether he would still pursue his presidential bid.
Escudero explained in front of a crowd of supporters and media at Club Filipino in Greenhills, San Juan City that he left the party to allow himself to decide on his own what position he should run for in 2010.
Legarda clarified that NPC members are not demoralized by Escudero’s decision to quit the party. She said, immediately after Escudero’s announcement their group met and talked about their next plan and strategy.
“I’m thankful of the full support of the NPC leaders and party members, I’m happy about their trust and confidence in me,” Legarda said.
Legarda was the keynote speaker of the 39th Annual Meeting of the Jalasig Sugarcane Planters Association yesterday at the Pintados Pension House in Passi City.
