Comelec says Iloilo City now 80% prepared for polls
The Iloilo City Comelec rated 80% the city’s preparedness for the 2010 elections stressing that there are still lots to do as far as cleansing the voters’ list and educating the voters for the automated polls next year.
Mr. G. Bert T. Arbis, Acting Election Officer IV of the Comelec-Iloilo City disclosed in a PIA-CATV program that the new voters’ list will be known on November 16 following the Election Registration Board Meeting.
The Comelec-Iloilo City head revealed that from December 2008 to September 30, 2009 the new registrants were recorded at 22,177; transferees from other places to Iloilo City- 3,961; reactivated- 1,096; transferred to other places- 1,432.
Arbis also reported that 39,605 voters have been deactivated, stressing that these are voters who have not voted in two successive elections, and the deceased persons.
He acknowledged the big help extended by various institutions and the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting for helping the Comelec push through with the voters’ education campaign.
Arbis noted that there were still many people who failed to register during the extension of voters’ registration held last Octobr 31.
He reasoned that Comelec should not be blamed “because for our part we even established satellite offices last February 2009 in various areas in Iloilo City, and held special registration in schools”.
“We are doing our best to cleanse the old voters’ list so that when the election time comes, all legitimate voters are in the lists,” Arbis said. (PIA6/T.Villavert)
