Provincial jail inmates undergo skills training
BACOLOD CITY — Twenty inmates of the Negros Occidental Provincial Jail are undergoing a 10-day skills training on Pandan bag-making, as part of Gov. Isidro P. Zayco’s program on providing livelihood opportunities for the inmates.
The training, spearheaded by the Technology and Livelihood Development Center (TLDC) headed by Ricardo Calsena, started yesterday. Inmates will showcase their finished products to the provincial officials on November 19 during the culmination of the event.
TLDC training coordinator, Dr. Nerissa Lemoncito said that one of the goals of the training is to promote the use of Pandan bags instead of plastic bags among consumers and lessen the collection of non-biodegradable wastes that are harmful to the environment.
Acting Provincial Jail Warden Dionisio Silva said that it will eventually become an income-generating activity for the inmates aside from the Christmas lanterns that they manufacture and sell.
They are trained by DTI-Accredited trainer, Felipe Julom, and were provided with the materials needed to make the Pandan bags, as well as lunch and snacks. (Capitol News)
