Ugsad to launch 18-day Campaign to end Violence Against Women
The Ugsad Gender Resource Center for Western Visayas is taking the lead in the 18-day Campaign on the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Children (EVAWC) to start on November 25-December 12, 2009.
Ugsad Chairperson Prof. Rose Asong said the campaign is governed by the theme: “Commit, Act, Demand: We can end violence against women” which is also the international theme, since the campaign takes an international mode originating with the Women’s Global Leadership Institute sponsored by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership in Rutgers University in 1991.
Originally the campaign was dubbed “16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence.
The participants in that Institute chose November 25, International Day Against Violence Against Women, and December 10, International Human Rights Day to emphasize that such violence is a human rights violation.
In the Philippines, through Presidential Proclamation 1172, the celebration includes December 12, which marks the adoption of the UN Convention Against Transnational Crime, hence making it 18 days.
A series of activities have been lined up starting Nov. 26, which includes showing of four films on 18-days EVAWC activism produced by WVSU Mass Communications students, exhibits from Dec.1-6, Forum on Dec. 1, at the UPVisayas Auditorium and observance of World AIDS Day, Research Colloquium, outreach at the jails, and public speaking contest among schools.
