Iloilo City will play host to a back-to-back international math competitions on November 28-December 2.
Young Math wizards will see action in the 2009 Asia Inter-Cities Teenagers Mathematics Olympiad (AITMO) at the Grand Hotel, City Proper and the 2009 Philippine Elementary Mathematics International Contest (PEMIC) at Punta Villa Resort in Arevalo district.
This, after the Local Organizing Board of the Philippine International Mathematics Competition (PIMC) 2009 decided to conduct simultaneously two international math competitions here.
The international math competition will be participated by no less than 1,000 students, coaches, math educators, and parents from nearly 30 countries in Asia, Africa, North and South America, Australia and Europe.
At least 23 countries have already confirmed their participation including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Bulgaria, Brunei, China, Cyprus, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Korea, Malaysia, Macau, Mongolia, Nepal, Nigeria, Romania, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, and Zimbabwe.
“The foreign delegates will experience Ilonggo hospitality and world-class accommodation here,” said Roberto Degolacion, executive director of Mathematics Trainers Guild (MTG).
To give Filipino kids a chance to participate in the international math competition, Degolacion said the PEMIC will showcase the math skills of 450 participants from 16 regions in the country.
Mayor Jerry Treñas said the City Government is ready to extend support and provide security to the participants.
“This is a very good event. Math, together with English and Science, is an important priority concern in education. This is an opportunity for us to show that Ilonggos can excel even in international contests,” said Treñas. (PIO)
