Vendors to swarm Calle Real, plazas starting Monday
Starting Monday next week the Iloilo City government will allow vendors to occupy portions of Calle Real and district plazas to sell their stuff. This yearly privilege is given to city vendors only.
Mayor Jerry Treñas yesterday said the vendors just have to seek clearance from the Special Services Unit (SSU) headed by Zela Gil for their permit. No tax will be collected from the vendors in the duration of the opportunity period given to them.
The vendors will be allowed to sell different merchandise from household to personal things, except firecrackers, from December 7 until December 31, 2009. The city will be establishing firecracker zones where vendors could sell firecrackers and pyrotechniques.
Treñas said vendors must maintain cleanliness in their occupied area and will leave a space for the people to pass by. Chances are given to the vendors to meet their financial requirements during the Holiday Season.
There are also people who are affected by the rising prices of commodities and wish to purchase goods peddled along the sidewalks rather than in malls, said Treñas.
Every year, it is a common sight to see vendors occupying the whole block of Calle Real or the Iznart and JM Basa streets. Calle Real is the city’s old commercial district before malls and supermarkets sprouted.
