Youth service program in WV in full swing
The implementation of the Youth National Service (YNS) program in Western Visayas is in full swing.
During the recent meeting of the National Youth Commission (NYC) 2nd Semestral Regional Advisory Council in Region 6 held at the Conference Room of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 6 in Molo of this city, some of the youths recruited under the program received their certificates of entitlement and first month stipends.
Rhenelyn Queen Dadulo, Visayas Area Officer of the NYC awarded the certificates to the recipients, aged 18 to 24 years old.
DWSD 6 Focal Person for Youth Eduardo Guevarra said around 50 unemployed and underemployed youths in the region were hired by the DSWD under the program which is in line with the Executive Order 788 issued by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last March 20, 2009.
EO No.788 “Promoting a Youth National Service” aims at strengthening the Philippine economy by investing in key programs for the economy, environment and education as well as initiating volunteerism, commitment and service to the underprivileged.
The DSWD and Department of Education are the agencies tasked to implement the program.
Guevarra said the qualified youths, mostly members of the Pag-asa Youth Association of the Philippines (PYAP), were assigned in the different disaster prone areas in the region starting last October.
Of the 50 youths, 13 are in Iloilo City, 12 in Iloilo province, 10 in Antique, 2 in Roxas City, 8 in Kalibo and 5 in Numancia, Aklan.
Under the program, youths hired will receive a P250 stipend a day. They will be involved in activities related to disaster preparedness, mitigation, recovery and rehabilitation as well as center-based service for the benefit of the clients/wards of DSWD and other government residential care facilities.
