Veteran journalist in photo exhibit
The Namit-Namit Art Gallery presents the photographs of veteran journalist Inday Espina-Varona in an exhibit from Dec. 15 entitled “Anima”, meaning life force, focuses on people glimpsed during Espina-Varona’s travels.
The photographs show a journalist’s sensibility for random moments, the here and now. None of the subjects were posed or organized; all photographs were taken with a single-lens camera.
“I’m pretty much an amateur,” says Espina-Varona. “I just try to juggle reporting and photography so almost everything is shot ‘on a wing and a prayer’ style”.
While she likes landscapes, her journalist’s instincts respond best to people. “It’s those quick silver moments that grab me,” Espina-Varona says. “These photographs hopefully offer a slice of the life force within us.’
Proceeds from Espina-Varona’s exhibit will be for the benefit of young cancer patients. The journalist, a breast cancer survivor, is editor in chief of the Philippines Graphic magazine, a winner of the 2007 top prize for investigative journalism in the Jaime Ongpin awards, an international fellow at the John S. Knight Professional Journalism Fellowships in Stanford University. She is also head of Abeni Media Productions, content provider for the cable television channel, Xpresscom.
