Filipino-Chinese Friendship Ark to rise in China town
A “Filipino-Chinese Friendship Ark” will soon rise in the city’s China Town after the Sangguniang Panlungsod approved a resolution allowing Mayor Jerry Trenas to issue a permit to the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Iloilo Inc. (FCCCI).
The resolution authored by Councilor Armand Parcon, chair of the committee on tourism, culture and historical affairs was in response to the request of the mayor seeking the approval of the legislative body to grant him the authority to issue a permit to FCCCI.
Trenas sought the approval of the city council after FCCCI President Dr. Roland Uy asked the city government to authorize their organization to install a Filipino-Chinese Friendship Ark at Iznart Street, City Proper.
Under the Local Government Code of 1991, the legislative body shall ensure the efficient deliveries of basic services and facilities and use of parks and public places. While, the chief executive shall exercise general supervision and control over all programs, projects, services and activities of the city.
The construction of the structure is at no expense to the city government. A tangible structure or marker will eventually symbolize the institutionalization of the annual Chinese New Year, said Parcon.
The Chinese New Year which is on its 8th year is already considered as tourism event of the city after the Dinagyang festival and Iloilo Paraw Regatta. The China town is the old Calle Real where Chinese owned stores thrive.
The construction of the friendship ark is also concurred by the City Tourism and Development Office (CTDO), Iloilo Business Club (IBC), City Engineers Office (CEO) and Traffic Management and Engineering Unit (TMEU).
With the approval of the resolution, comes FCCCI’s responsibility in the construction of the friendship ark. The construction of the ark must conform to the provisions of the National Building Code of the Philippines. They must coordinate with the CEO.
The FCCCI must also coordinate with the Iloilo City Cultural Heritage and Conservation Council for future plans geared towards the preservation of the historical landmark.
The proponent must also coordinate with the TMEU for the smooth flow of vehicular traffic flow and pedestrians during the construction of the marker. The safety of the pedestrians and vehicles passing the site is given emphasis in the resolution.
