Guv faces disqualification
Incumbent Iloilo Governor Niel Tupas Sr. is facing disqualification to run as congressman in the the 4th district of the province after a barangay health worker filed a petition for disqualification against him before the provincial Commission on Elections (Comelec).
In her petition, Mercidita Binubo has alleged that Tupas “is not a true resident of Brgy. Juanico” in Banate town in the province of Iloilo, and therefore not in any way qualified to represent the 4th district of Iloilo.
Tupas is on his last term as governor and is seeking a seat in the House of Representatives in next year’s May national elections.
The 60-year old Binubo, erstwhile “kagawad” of Brgy. Juanico asserted in her complaint that Tupas has not lived in the house which he built in Brgy. Juanico. Binubo also claimed that her petition against the governor has the unequivocal support of residents of the barangay.
For his part, Gov. Tupas said that Binubo’s petition “is replete with politicking.” (PNA)
