PNP rounds metro to ensure safety in firecracker zones
MEMBERS of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) led by Senior Supt. Melvin Mongcal rounded the city yesterday to check safety measures adopted at “firecracker zones.”
As the New Year celebration draws near, Mongcal said that they are expecting a rise in the sale of pyrotechnics.
Amid this busy trade, “we want to ensure that sellers won’t forget to institute safety precautions,” he added.
Basically, a vendor should equip their stalls with plastic cover for firecrackers, supply of water, sand, and no smoking sig,n Mongcal stated.
Part of the PNP’s inspection is also to ascertain if there are vendors selling firecrackers at areas snot designated by the city government.
If they would catch these vendors, Mongcal said that they would only tell them to transfer to the designated “firecracker zones.”
“If they would not heed to our advice, that’s the time that the items will be confiscated,” he added.
Most of these firecracker zones are located at plazas with few exceptions in Arevalo districts, the city’s firecracker capital, where some streets are allowed to sell pyrotechnics.
Earlier, the Department of Trade and Industry, PNP, and the Bureau of Fire Protection also did a product audit of the Arevalo Firecracker Multi-Purpose Cooperative.
The audit is part of the mandatory certification for fireworks by the Bureau of Product Standards (BPS).
