DOH urges Negrenses to practice birth spacing
The Province of Negros Occidental and the Department of Health (DOH) urged Negrenses to practice proper birth spacing during the celebration of the Population and Development (POPDEV) week recently with the theme “Sa Tamang Agwat ng Panganganak, Pamilya ay Aangat”.
Through the celebration, the DOH underscored the importance of responsible parenthood and parenting through birth spacing.
Responsible parenthood entails that couples plan for the birth of their first child and they properly space the birth of succeeding ones to ensure the number of children that they can raise responsibly.
DOH promotes proper birth spacing of 3 to 5 years. Within this interval, the mother gets enough time to regain her health after delivery or proper treatment if she suffers from chronic illness related to birth. Such time period will also give her time for herself, her husband, children and community.
With proper birth spacing, the children are well attended and their basic needs are sufficiently provided. With this, the father is able to attend to his personal needs; his financial burdens are alleviated and give him quality time to his wife and children. It allows the entire family the time to enjoy each other’s company and the opportunity to save and improve their standard of living.
Couples are called to seek information and services on responsible parenthood and family planning from their nearest health facility where they can be counseled on their desired family size, and avail of the needed health services. (PIA/cad)
