Legal adoption and its advantages (1)
(A series of thoughts and perspectives about legal adoption and birth simulation)
Birth simulation is rampant practice in country like ours because its cost is comparatively lower than legal adoption. Or so we think.
Birth simulation is the “tampering of the civil registry making it appear in the birth records that a certain child was born to a person who is not his/her biological mother, causing such child to lose his/her true identity and status.”
Prospective adoptive parents usually opt to this process because it is efficient. By just faking the facts of the child’s birth, the baby becomes theirs. No more court hearings, attorney’s fees and publication costs, child study report, etc.
Many people tolerate the practice of birth simulation because of sympathy either for the child or the prospective adoptive parents. Many married couples desperately want to have a child of their own but cannot have one for a reason or another. Or, there are many children out there whose parents are either incapable of raising them, providing them their basic needs, or simply with calloused conscience who, after giving birth, abandon their child with or without hope for other people to find and keep it for themselves.
Birth simulation, in many cases, works for the good of the child (at least for those who ended up with responsible parents and loving homes). But many stories of this practice, however, tell the dark, sad, and horrible experiences of children who have been victims of birth simulation.
Well, many of us are maybe not aware of these, but problems due to birth simulation are there and possible.
Last week, I was clarified with the issue after having attended the seminar at the Department of Social Welfare and Development Regional Office 6.
For those whose child birth is simulated and all of us who are familiar with the practice, it is important that we become aware of the usual problems if the child is not legally adopted. So, here they are:
It poses a hazard to the growth and development of the child.
Oftentimes, because of no legal boundaries, biological parent/s get involve in the child’s life and would impose rights over child’s ownership
Without proper screening and selection of adoptive parents as compared to the legal process, child can be a victim of abuse, neglect and insufficient support to education and his/her other needs.
Without consent from family members, the child often is not welcome, treated unjustly that would lead to development of insecurities which could greatly affect his/her personality development.
Without proper documentation, the child may lose his/her unique identity because of the troubles brought about by the above situations.
Thus, if the prospective adoptive parents are thinking to “save” money by going through birth simulation of their prospective adopted child, they are entirely missing the point.
