Apocalypse now?!
China has overtaken Japan as the world’s second largest industrial manufacturer, after the United States yesterday.
But since China is also the second worst contributor of greenhouse gases, I don’t think that it can be called genuine progress.

A 6.4 magnitude quake struck southern Taiwan on Thursday, with an epicenter 35 kilometers (22 miles) deep. No tsunami warning was immediately issued.
That’s the 10th major earthquake in world in just a week time. This is very alarming. Are we witnessing an Apocalypse now?!

The 19 martyrs of Aklan will be marked anew on March 23.
Hope their example will inspire our voters to choose their government officials wisely.

Buses fueled by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is expected to operate in the Visayas by 2015 bolstering the government’s effort to attain energy sufficiency and independence from imported fuel.
Is this sustainable, or is this another non-viable “flavor of the year” (like biofuel and biomass) of our pseudo-environmentalists in the Department of Energy?

The Comelec will hold a two-day live-in seminar for some 1,032 Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs) who are expected to serve during the May 2010 synchronized national and local elections in Iloilo City.
Will they be taught also how to reject bribes and how to be impartial, too?

Fishery officials assure the public that shellfish and other aqua marine products in Capiz are still safe to eat.
Good thing we are not yet attacked by red tide, unlike the other provinces in other regions.

Aklan public markets sell very high price of mongo nowadays.
Is this due to El Nino or simply just an act of greed?

Three suicide attacks, including one by a bomber who rode in an ambulance to hospital before blowing himself up, killed 33 people in central Iraq yesterday, just days before nationwide elections.
This is just a small slice compared to the Ampatuan massacre.

A provocative beer ad showing American celebrity Paris Hilton in suggestive poses has been recast and re-launched in Brazil after having been banned as sexist.
The irony is, Brazil is wilder than this during Mardi Gras and Football Games.

Senate President Enrile recently warned Filipino voters to beware of candidates who are spending a fortune to attain an elective post. Enrile issued this warning amid claims by presidential candidate Richard Gordon that a rival, Nacionalista Party standard-bearer Sen. Manny Villar, tried to bribe him to withdraw from the race.
This is a serious accusation. Villar must answer this at once for silence may mean guilt.

Three men supposedly with links with wanted Islamic militant Abdul Basit Usman were arrested by Taguig police past midnight Wednesday.
This is a rare great accomplishment to the police force. An atypical salute to the cops!

Mothers who work part-time are more likely to have healthier children than those who work full-time or who are not in the workforce, the author of an Australian study said yesterday.
There is no substitute for mother’s presence at home.

After being involved in the so-called “euro generals” scandal, retired police comptroller Eliseo dela Paz is now seeking a congressional seat for party-list group Angat Ating Kabuhayan (ANAK).
The gal and the guts! This is what current politics is all about. The culture of impunity reeks in the whole political structure of the country.

“The future for the Philippine economy is indeed much brighter now than it was in 2001,” says Gloria Arroyo, and adds, “our economy has doubled over the last nine years, and we are back on the radar screen of international investors.”
What fantasy land is she talking about? Definitely it is not the Philippines. Did she really visit the slums and the countryside lately?

The Catholic Church hierarchy is not about to back down on its campaign to stop the distribution of condoms and is calling for a ban on its advertisements in media and public places, a statement from the influential CBCP said.
Will it be better if the religious and the laity will use more time in explaining to the public the reasons why their “faithfuls” are not supposed to use those contraceptives. There are millions more Catholics in the streets that seem to be oblivious about the issue. They need the wisdom of the Church.
