2010 nat’l literacy awards launched in WV
The Department of Education (DepEd) and Literacy Coordinating Council (LCC) formally launched the 2010 National Literacy Awards in Western Visayas during an orientation program held last March 4 here.
LCC head Dr. Norma Salcedo and program consultant lawyer Lilia Garcia led the launching of this year’s national search for outstanding literacy programs and local government units with exemplary literacy programs.
Their team oriented participating representatives from local government units, other government institutions and non-government organizations on the search and its revised guidelines as a major highlight of the launching activity.
Salcedo said the annual awards was launched in 1994 in support to the commitment of the Philippine government to achieve the goal of the United Nations (UN) of reducing adult literacy by 50 percent in 2015 and consequently improve the quality of life of Filipinos.
She commended the region for contributing to the efforts by producing outstanding literacy programs and LGUs with good practices in literacy promotion led by the municipality of Tubungan.
DepEd Region 6 Resource Mobilization for Special Programs and Projects chief Corazon Polohan said the municipality has been entered in the national Hall of Fame of the Awards for topping the competition in its category for three consecutive years.
This qualifies the local government unit for UNESCO’s international literacy award, said Polohan.
A regional evaluation will be conducted starting March 26 to determine the region’s national qualifiers for this year by April 26.
The Regional Search Committee is composed of DepEd as chair and the Department of the Interior and Local Government as co-chair with the Philippine Information Agency, National Economic and Development Authority and the academe as members. DepEd’s Alternative Learning System Division in the region serves as the coordinator.
The NLA is also in conjunction with the annual National Literacy Week on September 8-11 during which the national winners will be awarded. (PIA 6)
