CSC: Be a part of Earth Hour 2010
ROXAS CITY – The Civil Service Commission (CSC) is urging all public servants to be a part of Earth Hour 2010 on March 27 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
The announcement also recommends activities like community mobilization to switch off lights in their households, major streets and in landmarks, if and when possible.
“Mobilize stakeholders in organizing a parallel Earth Hour event in your city or community and the private sector by switching off their signage lights or some of their lights in their facilities as their business operations will allow,” the announcement added.
In 2009, over one billion people in 4,088 cities worldwide participated in the symbolic act of switching off lights to show deep concern on global warming and the environmental impact of climate change.
The country ranked first in terms of public participation with 647 cities and towns switching off their lights.
Earth Hour is a global event held every last Saturday of March annually to ask households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.
It was conceived by World Widlife Fund (WWF) and The Sydney Morning Herald in 2007 with 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all non-essential lights, said a Wikipedia backgrounder about the event. (PIA/A.Lumaque)
