DOH promotes 1,000 cities, 1,000 lives campaign
BACOLOD CITY — A global movement to make cities healthier is being promoted by the Department of Health in celebration of the World Health Day 2010.
From April 7 to 11, DOH with the local government units urge the public to take part in the 1000 cities, 1000 lives campaign in celebration of the Year of Urban Health.
Cities around the world are called on to open up public spaces like parks, city halls, streets, among others to health for one day in the five-day celebration for meetings, clean up campaigns and closing portions of streets to motorized vehicles dedicating the mentioned areas for such purpose.
For cities who want to commit opening their public places to health for one day should sign up and register at the World Health Organization website at http://www.who.int/whd2010 and state plans for the children.
To involve 1000 lives, citizens are asked to provide stories of urban health champions who have significant impact on health in their respective areas.
An ordinary citizen, aside from urging their cities to commit public spaces is encouraged to nominate and promote a health champion by sending a four-minute video (or shorter) to the WHO youtube site at http://www.youtube.com/whd2010.
As of April 7, more than a thousand cities have registered and 38 cities are from the Philippines. In Western Visayas, Bacolod City and Iloilo city have officially registered and joined the campaign.
On World Health Day 2010, the public is urged to help give voice to the common desire to make cities healthier. (PIA/EAD)
