Jobs and livelihood fairs to highlight Labor Day 2010
Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) 6 is gearing up for the Labor Day celebration in the region on May 1 which will be highlighted by jobs and livelihood fairs, and one-stop shop service.
DOLE 6 Assistant Regional Director Crispin Dannug Jr. said there are two centers of celebration in the region on Labor Day. These are SM City in Iloilo City and Bacolod City.
Dannug said some 60 local companies and employment recruitment agencies and 15 overseas placement agencies have already signified their participation in the jobs fair in Iloilo City.
In Bacolod City, around 40 local companies and recruitment agencies and 5 overseas placement firms will participate in the jobs fair.
The one-day event will also showcase products of the different groups assisted by DOLE 6 in the provinces of Guimaras, Iloilo and Negros Occidental.
Some of these projects are the cashew and mango processed products and model galleon making in Guimaras; mango processed products in Igbaras, Iloilo; tailored products and apparel in Lambunao, Iloilo; processed bangus of overseas Filipino workers’ associations in Dumangas; ginger ale products and earthworm casting in Negros Occidental.
Dannug said 12 government agencies such as the DFA, NSO, POEA, OWWA, and NBI, amongst others, are expected to provide the necessary services to the workers during the celebration.
He added that a total of 4,080 applicants were hired-on-the spot and some 8,103 applicants were referred to other agencies during the Labor Day and Kalayaan Job Fairs conducted in May and June, last year.
The event in Iloilo City will also be an avenue for DOLE 6 to recognize the winners in their Search for the Best DOLE-assisted projects in the region. The contest has five categories namely: individual, group, women, fishery sector and youth.
The theme for this year’s Labor Day celebration is “Manggagawang Pilipino, Kaagapay sa Pagbabago” which underscores the crucial role of the workers in the national efforts to achieve development and an opportunity to pay tribute to the Filipino workers, both local and overseas. (PIA)
