Iloilo City marks Earth Day with river clean-up
The 40th anniversary of Earth Day will be commemorated Thursday with a river clean-up in the city’s Jaro district.
Leading the activity is the Iloilo City Solid Waste Management Board (ICSWMB), chaired by Mayor Jerry P. Treñas.
A short program at the Montinola Bridge around 6:00 in the morning will signal the start of the event.
The Jaro River clean-up will cover about 400 meters of riverbanks in Tabuc Suba, Benedicto and Simon Ledesma where people can easily see the mass of garbage dumped in stagnant water, in grasslands and at the houses built by informal settlers.
Joining the city government in the clean-up drive are the Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Nissan-Iloilo.
Earth Day every April 22 is intended to create awareness and attentiveness to the plight of the environment. It started in 1970 through an environmental teach-in by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson.
This year, more than one billion people in 190 countries are taking part in making a global green economy. (PIO)
