Wanted: Ilonggo modern day heroes
The search is on for Ilonggo modern day heroes who exemplify the traits of Filipino men and women of long ago who excelled in their respective fields and sacrificed everything for their country.
Believing that there is a hero in each and every one, SM City, ABS-CBN and Junior Chamber International (JCI) Regatta launched “Pinoy Icon 2010” to identify 12 heroes of today who in certain aspects reflect the works of national heroes.
The search is in line with the 112th celebration of Philippine Independence Day on June 12, 2010.
Filipino males or females who have roots in Iloilo may be nominated.. They must be at least 30 years old, and with a body of work relevant and with impact to the Ilonggo community.
He or she should have lived in Iloilo for at least five years or a cumulative total of five years as evidenced by a certificate of residency from their barangay captain.
An individual, a group or an organization can nominate anybody deemed worthy of the award. The nominating individual or group should identify one national hero befitting the nominee.
The heroes that are appropriate in certain fields are Jose Rizal for medicine; Apolinario Mabini, education; Melchora Aquino, civic work; Teresa Magbanua, women’s and children’s rights; Graciano Lopez-Jaena, media; Juan Luna, visual arts; Francisco Baltazar, literature; Julian Felipe, music; Emilio Aguinaldo, government service; Martin Delgado, military service; Gomburza, religious service; and Panday Pira, technology and inventions.
A hero’s title may be given to a female nominee depending on the justification of the nominator; the same is true for the title of heroine if it is justifiable for a male nominee.
Nomination forms are available at the Marketing Department of SM City Iloilo; JCI c/o Elmer Usi of Procter and Gamble in Marymart Building, Ungka II, Jaro; and ABS-CBN, Lapaz.
Deadline for submission of nomination forms, requirements and needed documents is on May 15, 5:00 in the afternoon at SM City Marketing Department in Mandurriao.
Winners will be informed on May 25, while the grand awarding ceremony is on June 12 at the said mall. (PIO)
