MRWD head clarifies water interruption
ROXAS CITY – Metro Roxas Water District (MRWD) clarified that the water interruption that occurred last week was caused by water salinity.
Interim General Manager (IGM) Rosemarie Marquez told The News Today (TNT) that high level of sea water brought by high tide, which was 1.9 meters, was able to penetrate the fresh water in Panitan water treatment plant, thus, the MRWD management had no option but to cease its operation causing water interruption last Tuesday.
Last May 18, water concessionaires lodged their complaints on several radio stations and the MRWD office of having no water from 2 p.m. up to 9 p.m.
It was on the following day where the MRWD justified the unexpected water interruption that caused member-consumers inconvenience.
According to Marquez, this is the second time around where the sea water penetrated the water district treatment plant in Panitan. The first one took place last ten years ago.
She added that the water salinity occurred when there is shallow fresh water in the Panay river caused by the long dry spell or El Niño.
Panay river fresh water is the source of MRWD which is then supplied to this city, Panitan, Panay, Ivisan and Sigma, said Marquez.
She said that MRWD will also supply the water needs of Sapian town soon.
Meanwhile, Marquez said that the water district implemented its promotion to new connections since January and will end this coming June.
She added that anyone could avail service of new connection by paying P300 as down payment and the remaining balance from P1,500 as fees is payable through installment basis.
The lady IGM also said that the recent 10% water rate increase implementation has no opposition as the water district has justified its rationale.
