Freedom day parade highlights 112th I-Day in Roxas City
ROXAS CITY – Thousands of Capiceños joined the parade last June 12 along the major thoroughfares here to mark the city and provincial government’s observance of 112th Independence Day celebration.
The parade which started at the Villareal Stadium and ended at the city’s public plaza was followed by a flag raising ceremony led by Capiz Gov. Victor A. Tanco, Sr. and Roxas City Mayor Vicente Bermejo.
A short and simple program paved way to the messages of Tanco and Bermejo.
“This freedom which we have attained through the sweat, tears and blood of our heroes 112 years ago is a legacy that should be reminisced,” Tanco noted.
The chief provincial executive has also underscored that the freedom from foreign domination must be complemented with a continued quest for independence from poverty, hunger and diseases, among others.
For his part, Bermejo said that the celebration calls everyone to be responsible enough in fighting ignorance, poverty and political apathy.
“Democracy as we enjoy today can not and will not fully work without exercising our individual and collective responsibility,” Bermejo said.
The celebration with the theme “Kalayaan: Tagumpay ng Bayan” was launched last May 28 with the observance of the “Araw ng Watawat” (National Flag Day) in Cavite City to commemorate the Battle of Alapan where the Philippine flag was first hoisted at Teatro Caviteno by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo in 1898. (PIA/A.Lumaque)
