32nd Disability Week preparations in WV begin
The Regional Council for Disability Affairs (RCDA) in Western Visayas has started the preparation of activities for the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week in the region slated next month.
National Council for Disability Affairs Regional Program Coordinator for Region VI Ruth Tacujan said the event will be commemorated starting July 17 and will culminate on the birthdate of Apolinario Mabini, the “Sublime Paralytic” on July 23.
Tacujan was in Iloilo City to attend the meeting of the RCDA 6 where discussions included those on preparations for the NDPR week celebration in the region.
“This year 2010 marks the 32nd year that the country will observe the event. The Department of Public Works and Highways has been chosen to be the lead agency with the Department of Health as vice-chair for this year’s celebration”, said Tacujan.
Some of the activities being considered in the regional celebration are those that will focus on this year’s theme “Sa Istrukturang Accessible, Lahat Ay Able” and will be finalized in a succeeding meeting.
Tacujan said the theme for this year’s celebration was aptly chosen and adopted to align with the functions of the lead agency whose mandate, among others, concerns the promotion of the accessibility of persons with disabilities towards a barrier-free environment pursuant to Batas Pambansa Bilang 344 known as the “Accessibility Law” and ably supported by Republic Act 7277, otherwise known as the “Magna Carta for Disabled Persons and its amendatory law, RA 9442.
The annual week-long event also intends to stimulate public awareness on disability issue and concerns that will strengthen the involvement of the different government and non-government organizations including cause-oriented groups, civil society, the academe, local government units, business sector, media, and other entities of society.
