Capiz PHO calls for revival of 4S strategy against dengue
ROXAS CITY – The Provincial Health Office of Capiz has called on the public to revive the 4 o’clock habit and employ the 4S approach to fight dengue, a report of the Philippine Information Agency said.
Dr. Evelyn Bolido, medical specialist of PHO Capiz, said Capiceños are encourage to revitalize and put in place the 4 o’clock habit of doing clean-up drive in their respective communities.
With the community effort of doing the 4S strategy against the deadly dengue disease, the spread of the dengue-carrying mosquitoes will be stopped, she said.
The 4-S strategy involves Searching and destroying all mosquito breeding sites; Self-protection measures; Seeking early treatment; and Saying no to indiscriminate fogging except during outbreaks.
Bolido pointed out the need to destroy all the breeding sites of mosquitoes and to discard containers that may contain water.
Breeding sites can be destroyed by draining the clogged waterways and putting soil in small pockets of water.
Bolido said they have already coordinated with the different rural health units in Capiz, including the schools and churches to help in the drive against dengue.
Dengue attacks not only children but also adults, she said.
Records from the PHO show that as of July 3, there are already 638 dengue cases in the province. Twenty-eight other patients from outside the province were also confined in various hospitals in Capiz.
Seven deaths were reported during the first half of 2010.
Although most dengue patients are children (333 cases) who are 1 to 10 years old, there were also 6 dengue victims aged above 50 years old.
“We need the cooperation of the public in the drive against dengue as we do not want that more will die of said virus,” Bolido said.
