Info pours in but no breakthrough yet: police
Despite the P500,000 reward raised for anyone who can identify the assailants of Aklan militant leader Fernando Baldomero and the efforts of two police teams going after the gunmen, investigators have yet to strike a major breakthrough in the case.
Chief Supt. Samuel Pagdilao Jr., police regional director, said pieces of evidence keep pouring but they have found nothing significant so far that would lead to the immediate solution of the case.
“We are gathering witnesses and we have been continuously receiving information,” he said.
To further boost the investigation, Pagdilao created two probe teams to investigate Baldomero’s murder.
He said one team will focus on the previous incidents like the grenade-throwing incident at Baldomero’s house in Lezo town last March 19. The other team will look into the murder itself.
Investigators are optimistic they will find a link between the previous incident and Baldomero’s murder on July 5.
Pagdilao also ordered the investigating teams to gather as many photographs of known assassins, gunmen, henchmen of politicians, and hitmen of rebel groups that witnesses may possibly identify as a suspect in the killing.
The Baldomero murder is a must-solve case because it is the first case of militant activist’s murder under the administration of President Benigno Simeon Aquino III, who committed to go after the murderers of journalists and activists in the country.
Over the weekend, Pagdilao said he visited Baldomero’s wake and assured his relatives that the police will not stop its investigation until justice is served to their family.
