‘Gov’t buildings should be PWD-friendly’
The Department of Public Works and Highways 6 said that all buildings owned by the government should comply with the Accessibility Law.
Alberto Saclauso of the DPWH said that government agencies must be the first to observe the Accessibility Law and serve as example to private businesses and other agencies that will construct buildings in the future, a report of the Philippine News Agency said.
The Accessibility Law requires establishments, including government-owned buildings, to provide standardized access for Persons With Disabilities.
Buildings should have ramps, restroom, elevators, and parking areas for PWDs, Saclauso said.
Saclauso said the law is part of the national government’s effort to provide better services to the public, including PWDs. It also in support of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation week, celebrated every third week of July.
His team is currently checking government buildings in the city and making recommendations on how to make these offices PWD-friendly.
DPWH and its member agencies already checked the building of Bureau of Internal Revenue, Government Service Insurance System, and Department of Social Welfare and Development in Iloilo City.
More government buildings will be checked before the month ends, Saclauso said.
