IPHO raises typhoid fever alert
The Iloilo Provincial Health Office has reported a rise in the number of typhoid fever cases in Iloilo province with 684 cases already recorded from January to July 23 this year.
Areas with high typhoid fever cases are the towns of Cabatuan, 87; Sara, 84; San Dionisio, 43; Dumangas, 37; Concepcion, 33; Maasin, 31; Pototan, 31; Lemery, 28; Passi City, 27; and Calinog, 25.
However, the IPHO said that so far, there is no reported death from among the typhoid fever cases in the province.
Typhoid fever is an illness transmitted by the ingestion of food or water contaminated with the feces of an infected person.
Symptoms of the disease include chest congestion, abdominal pain, and discomfort. Fever becomes constant. But improvement on the patient occurs in the third and fourth week when there is no complication.
DENGUE FEVER
Meanwhile, Provincial Administrator Raul Banias has directed the IPHO to step up their information drive against the hemorrhagic dengue fever which has already reached 789 cases in Iloilo.
Banias was designated acting governor Monday when Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. attended President Benigno Simeon Aquino’s State of the Nation Address.
Banias, a medical doctor, said he has directed the IPHO to coordinate with the local government units and municipal health offices to help in the campaign against dengue.
While dengue cases are increasing, there is still no basis to declare an outbreak, he said.
Based on the IPHO monitoring, there are seven reported deaths aside from the 789 dengue cases in Iloilo.
Passi City has 96 cases with one death; Pototan, 90 with two deaths; Barotac Nuevo, 52; Guimbal, 46 with one death; Tubungan, 41; Calinog, 32 with one death; Cabatuan, 27; Janiuay, 26; Barotac Viejo, 25; and San Enrique, 23.
Oton and Bingawan are reporting fairly lower dengue cases, but both recorded one death each. PNA
