Segregate waste at source, city residents told
The Iloilo City government is urging the public to practice waste segregation as it starts to implement a modified garbage collection scheme this month.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog appealed for cooperation to make the new trash collection run system smoothly.
Raul Gallo, chief of the Office of Public Services, said he has observed the continuing negligence of households in separating their recyclables from biodegradable wastes despite repeated reminders.
Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 mandates that segregation should be done at source.
Segregated collection will also reduce the volume of waste being dumped at the city’s dumpsite in Calajunan, Mandurriao.
Starting the middle of August, recyclables and residual wastes will be collected every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, while biodegradable items like wastes from the kitchen and yard will be picked up every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
The modified collection scheme will be first implemented in the City Proper district where 18 trucks will collect garbage.
The district will be clustered into three areas, with each cluster having six trucks.
A public address system will be installed on the garbage truck to announce their arrival.
