Jaywalking will not be tolerated: mayor
Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog has vowed to continue the implementation of the anti-jaywalking ordinance despite resistance from “critics” for the supposed improper enforcement of the law.
“Let us continue the (enforcement) of the law, don’t spare anyone – not even your relatives or friends,” the chief executive members of the Task Force on Anti-Jaywalking.
He said information drive regarding the ordinance started last month until it was revitalized on August 15.
Implementers were properly briefed by City Administrator Norlito Bautista and Legal Officer Jose Junio Jacela.
“The law may be harsh but we are doing this for the good of everyone,” Mabilog added, pointing out that the ordinance has been there since in 1992.
“What is important is we are educating and disciplining the people where to properly cross the street,” he said.
The ordinance penalizes a person who crosses from one side of the street to another without using pedestrian lane or overpass. A fine of P50 and/or imprisonment of not more than one day are meted out to violators.
It drew criticisms because of the supposed lack of signages, pedestrian lanes, and proper information dissemination.*
