Barangay, SK elections to push through October 25: COMELEC
MANILA – The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) said yesterday the October 25 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections will push through, a report of the Philippine News Agency said.
Election Commissioner Rene Sarmiento said that there will be elections in October after the issue on whether or not push through with the polls has been resolved.
“It’s a big relief for the COMELEC that this issue (on postponement) has finally been resolved. At least we can now focus on preparing for October 25,” he said.
Sarmiento said it was COMELEC Chairman Jose Melo who told them that the October polls is pushing through.
“It was Chairman Melo who announced it to us after a meeting in Malacañang yesterday [Tuesday]. The senators, congressmen and the President were also there. After the meeting we were informed that the elections is pushing through,” he said.
As for the preparation for October elections, Sarmiento said they are currently preparing to conduct the Electoral Registration Board (ERB) hearing to be held this month.
“We just finished with the registration so the next will be the ERB hearing on the registrants to know whether a registration is okay or not because there might be some opposition,” he said.
It would be recalled that lawmakers are pushing for the postponement of the polls.
Earlier, Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri filed Senate Bill No. 60 to move the elections from October 2010 to October 2012.
A similar proposal has likewise been filed before the House of Representatives by Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman of the House minority bloc.*PNA
