Town police chief survives slay try
A town police chief in Capiz survived an attempt on his life Monday afternoon at the Poblacion of Pilar town.
Senior Police Officer 4 Morito Vega, officer-in-charge of Pilar Police Station, was walking when he met Alfredo Aperocho, 49, of San Fernando village, Pilar.
Aperocho, who was reeking with liquor, shook Vega’s hand. Seconds later, he pulled a homemade single-shot Armalite and shot Vega.
Vega was not hit for he was able to run when he saw Aperocho raising the gun.
The suspect ran towards a nearby internet station, a few meters away from the police station.
Responding policemen cornered the suspect, who eventually surrendered.
Aperocho said he shot Vega on impulse.
“Gusto ko gid man magbalos kay masakit ang kamatayon sang pakaisa ko (I really want revenge because my first cousin’s death was painful),” he said.
Aperocho is the first cousin of Roger Aperocho, a village watchman, who was shot dead by Vega last August 15 in Brgy. San Esteban.
Vega is under investigation for the said incident.
But he earlier claimed that he shot Roger for self-defense because the latter resisted arrest when he served the warrant for homicide issued to him by the 6th Regional Trial Court Branch 66 in Barotac Viejo, Iloilo.
Vega then said Roger pulled a grenade from his pocket, prompting him to shoot the watchman.
But several witnesses said Roger was not carrying a grenade.*
