Basngi named city police chief
After several months of sitting as officer-in-charge, Senior Supt. Dennis Basngi was named director of the Iloilo City Police Office by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog Wednesday night.
Mabilog announced Basngi’s appointment during the Mayor’s Ball culminating the city’s the 73rd Charter Day celebration at Punta Villa Resort.
In choosing Basngi over four other recommendees, he cited Basngi’s good performance in maintaining peace and order in Iloilo City.
The mayor had earlier said he is satisfied with the ICPO chief’s performance after the crime rate in the city decreased.
He also cited Basngi’s introduction of a system of patrolling that augmented police visibility.
Other recommendees included Senior Supt. Marietto Valerio of the PRO6 Regional Investigation and Detective Management Division, Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz of PRO6 Regional Operations and Plans Division, Senior Supt. Orlando Ualat, and Senior Supt. Manuel Cubillo.
Reports said it was a toss-up between Basngi and de la Paz, a former director of the Iloilo Provincial Police Office, who supposedly had the backing of the Police Regional Office 6 hierarchy while Basngi has the trust and confidence of Rep. Jerry Treñas.*
