Capitol promotes chemical-free tilapia
The Iloilo provincial government is promotes its “chemical-free tilapia project” that would produce the first organic tilapia fingerlings in the province.
The 1,000-square meter organic tilapia farm is located inside the compound of the Iloilo Rehabilitation Center in Brgy. Nanga, Pototan, Iloilo.
The project, supervised by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources 6, aims to promote healthy lifestyle by using the aquaculture technology in inland farming.
BFAR-Iloilo officer-in-charge Carol Cajilig said around 2, 500 fingerlings are now being cultured and would be harvested five to six months from now.
Cajilig said they feed duckweeds and rice bran to fingerlings as part of their organic farming method.
Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. said organic tilapia farming is a good project and hoped that it will serve as a model project for farmers.*
