Asia Foundation to donate P14M worth of books to Capiz schools
ROXAS CITY – The schools divisions of Roxas City and Capiz province are recipients of more than 50,000 books titles worth P14 million from the Asia Foundation under the Kiwanis Book Bank Program of Kiwanis International.
The books will be distributed to more than 500 public and private elementary and secondary schools and state and private colleges and universities in the province.
Past District Governor Ike Altavas, who chairs the District Committee of Kiwanis Book Bank Program, said the program is aimed to boost readership among school children and students in Capiz.
Steven Rood, country representative of Asia Foundation and Efren Balajadia, director of Books for Asia Philippines, will turn over the books to all school principals during the turnover ceremony at the Capiz Gymnasium on September 16, 9 a.m.
Capiz Gov. Victor Tanco will give a brief remark in behalf of the provincial government during the “Books for Asia Turnover Ceremonies.”
The province under its Pagulikid Development Plans also seeks to improve readership and literacy skills among schoolchildren as part of its primary aim to provide quality education.
Altavas said the Kiwanis Books Bank Program through a network of Kiwanis Clubs in the Visayas and Mindanao has partnered with the Asia Foundation since 2004 to distribute books to the remotest village schools and child-learning centers of southern Philippines.
The Asia Foundation packs the book bundles in small boxes and these are delivered to schools by Kiwanians through a doable process of selection, delivery, valuation and monitoring. It is a sustaining program to start off building mini-libraries in selected schools.
The book providers believe that sharing books to children to become lifelong readers shall prepare them academically to become better learners and perhaps build today their hopes and dreams for bright future.*
