Capitol to transfer IRC control to BJMP in two years
The Iloilo Provincial Government and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology have agreed in principle the transfer of management and control of the Iloilo Rehabilitation Center in Pototan to the BJMP in the next two years.
Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. said yesterday he already met with officials of the BJMP Regional Office last Wednesday where they agreed on a two-year transition for the proposed transfer.
Within the transition period, Defensor said the BJMP will take charge of the management of IRC although the entire operation of the IRC and its employees will still be under the provincial government.
After two years, the entire operation will be handed over to the BJMP subject to consultation with the employees of IRC and approval of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.
Defensor said the transfer is intended to upgrade the services “of our correctional and detention centers.”
“It will upgrade the status and the compensation of the provincial guards,” he said.
Defensor said unqualified jailguards will be given the chance to qualify by complying with the eligibility requirements of the BJMP like taking exams or undergoing further training.
The transition period is expected to start by January next year.*
