IBM volunteers assist in disaster rehab efforts
As part of IBM’s Corporate Service Corps program, a team of IBM volunteers from around the world came to Manila recently to work with various organizations to help the country in its disaster preparedness, recovery and rehabilitation initiatives.
Composed of IBM employees from India, Argentina, Costa Rica, Brazil, USA, Canada, Germany, France and Belgium, the team is working with National Institute of Geological Sciences, Philippine National Red Cross, Manila Observatory, Environmental Science for Social Change, and Department of Agrarian Reform to embark on projects where they are able to apply their professional knowledge, industry expertise, and business insights.
In September last year, IBM reached out to government agencies to provide recovery and relief support in the aftermath of Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng, committing P40 million worth of IBM technology, services and expertise.
The company also committed to deploy two CSC teams to Manila – in March and September this year – to work on projects focused on improving the country’s disaster preparedness and recovery efforts.
CSC, IBM’s version of the Peace Corps, is now on its third year. It sends teams of eight to fifteen high performing employees from around the world to key emerging markets for a month to try and help solve core socio-economic challenges and issues.
Since its inception in 2007, IBM has deployed nine CSC teams to the Philippines to support a broad range of small and medium enterprises, non-government and government organizations in six different locations, including Metro Manila.*
