‘Cuello inspiration, pride to Ilonggos’
An inspiration and pride to Ilonggos, said Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. of boxing hero Denver Cuello, international strawweight champion of the World Boxing Council.
Cuello, dubbed “The Excitement,” met Defensor Sr. at the Provincial Capitol yesterday morning.
The Iloilo provincial government has commended Cuello for the honor and pride he brought to the Ilonggos.
“Cuello is like Manny Pacquiao who gives inspiration to us. We hope that not only Cuello will bring pride to the Ilonggos. Aton ini bugal (This is our pride),” Defensor said.
The 23-year-old boxer, a native of Cabatuan, Iloilo, defended his crown against former IBF Mini Flyweight Champion Muhammad “The Rock” Rachman of Indonesia during their match at MSU-IIT Gymnasium in Iligan City last September 25.
The present title is already the 24th boxing game that Cuello has won since he started at 16. So far, he lost only four games.
For his part, Cuello said that his determination to be a good boxer inspired him to succeed in most of his games.
The continuous trainings are also part of his self-discipline, he said.
Cuello thanked the Jaro brothers, Aljoe and Franky, who act as his manager and trainor, respectively.
He also asked the support of the provincial government to make possible for his next fight to be held in Iloilo.
In response, Defensor said he will study the proposal.*
