Guv backs Orendain in Liga reelection bid
Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. has announced his support to Board Member Jeneda Salcedo-Orendain, president of Liga ng mga Barangay, in her bid for re-election.
“It’s an advantage for Orendain because she has my support and we have the majority number to support her candidacy,” he said.
Defensor said that majority of the congressmen and mayors in Iloilo province also gave their support to Orendain, who was reelected as barangay captain in Sara town.
Among those who have pledged support for Orendain were Vice Gov. Richard Garin, 1st District Rep. Janet Garin, 2nd District Rep. Augusto Syjuco, and 4th District Rep. Ferjenel Biron.
As of now, Defensor said he has not received any information on who would challenge Orendain.
Iloilo province has 1,721 barangays in its 43 towns and the component city of Passi.
Support For Ong
In Iloilo City, Love Joy Hosenilla, head of Brgy. Buntatala and president of Liga ng mga Barangay in Jaro district, has pledged support to the candidacy of incumbent Liga President Irene Ong.
Ong, chairman of Brgy. President Roxas, is seeking re-election against Roberto Divinagracia of Brgy. San Agustin, City Proper, who will be backed by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and Rep. Jerry Treñas.
On the other hand, Ong is associated with former Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Raul Gonzalez Sr., who was defeated by Mabilog in the mayoral race last May.
“I still believe in the leadership and capacity of Ong to handle the league. This is the reason why I will support him,” Hosenilla said.
Hosenilla, who is on his last term won over his two opponents Nicolas Hermano and Warlito Gerona, who were supported by the camp of Mabilog.
He said, however, he does not yet know the stand of the 41 other village chiefs in Jaro district.
“Personally, I will support Ong. I do not know the stand of the other village chiefs in my district but whatever it is, I will respect it,” he told The News Today.*
