The Department of Social Welfare and Development 6 has so far released P61 million for shelter projects in eight municipalities and cities across Western Visayas.
Of the amount, Kalibo, Aklan received P2.15 million for 43 units; Valderrama, Antique, P4.45 million for 89 units; San Remigio, Antique, P5.25 million for 105 units; Iloilo City, P35 million for 500 units; Cabatuan, Iloilo, P2 million for 44 units; Ajuy, Iloilo, P5 million for 100 units; Anini-y, Antique, P4.293 million for 60 units; and Pontevedra, Negros Occidental, P3.579 million for 50 units.
“We have a total of 991 beneficiaries under the shelter assistance program. These were released as part of our rehabilitation to victims of typhoon Frank which hit Panay Island in 2008,” said Julian Ledesma, focal person for disaster of DSWD 6.
Under the Shelter Assistance Program, beneficiaries are provided environmentally-friendly, structurally strong shelter units that can withstand various forces of hazards such as typhoons, flooding and earthquakes.
The DSWD embarks on a shelter project only in municipalities that have available relocation site and that are willing to give a counterpart for the site development.
The DSWD 6 also released P327,600 for cash- for-work, a complementary project for Shelter Program.
Cash-for-work gives the beneficiaries the chance to temporarily leave their work so that they could attend to the construction of their houses. The financial assistance given is equivalent to payment for 10 working days.
Recently, the 100 family-beneficiaries in Ajuy, Iloilo received cash-for -work in the amount of P156,000.
Julian Ledesma, core shelter project in-charge of DSWD 6, said the cash for work has been released to the beneficiaries to provide them income for their labor in constructing the core shelters.
They were paid P156 per day for their 10-day labor.
At present, six core shelters have been constructed with eight more under construction, all in Brgy. San Antonio.
The project aims to construct 100 core shelter projects for the 100 families displaced by Typhoon Frank on June 21, 2008.
Each core shelter costs P90,000.
Ledesma said the fund for the core shelter project in Ajuy was released last June 22 but actual construction started in July.*PNA
