‘Anti-jaywalking drive helps improve traffic situation’
Traffic condition in Iloilo City has significantly improved with the strict enforcement of the anti-jaywalking ordinance, according to the City Hall.
Community service officer Zellah Gil of the Special Services Unit said pedestrians are now using the skywalks and pedestrian lanes since they enforced Ordinance No. 309.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog has ordered to revitalize existing ordinances on anti-jaywalking and anti-littering after he assumed office last July.
The anti-jaywalking rule has been extended last month to Luna St. in La Paz; along Bonifacio Drive in City Proper; and Benigno Aquino Ave. in Mandurriao in front of SM City Iloilo.
“The implementation thereon met no objection from pedestrians since most of them are already aware of the existence of the ordinance,” the SSU report said.
Ordinance No. 309 was first fully enforced in August along Valeria-Delgado St. and in Gen. Luna-Valeria Sts. in City Proper.
In November alone, the SSU has apprehended 605 violators.
Violators are fined P50 and/or imprisoned not more than one day.
The ordinance stipulates the need for the curtailment of rampant jaywalking in major thoroughfares to maintain peace and order among the inhabitants of the city for the promotion of general welfare.*
