3 die, 38,000 affected by flooding in Capiz
ROXAS CITY – Three persons died while 38,178 persons from 7,541 families, were affected by the massive flooding that hit Capiz last week.
Heavy rains submerged 138 barangays in the province, including those in Roxas City.
A report of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council identified the two fatalities, who drowned, as Greggy de los Santos, 10, of Brgy. Dapdapan, Sapian and Richard Diestro, 15, of Tabuc Sur, Panitan.
The third from Brgy. Duyoc, Dao, Capiz remained unidentified as of press time.
Torrential rains poured for four days from Thursday to Sunday in Capiz although there was no typhoon signal in Western Visayas, Jose Daradar, PDRRMC officer, said.
The PDRRMC reported that 18 barangays in Panay went under water, affecting 1,268 families or 6,340 persons, and leaving 522 houses damaged; Pontevedra, eight barangays, 698 families or 3,490 persons, with 375 persons evacuated to two temporary shelters.
Other towns affected are: Panitan, 20 brgys., 870 families or 3,897 persons; Sigma, 15 brgys., 2,087 families or 10,404 persons; Mambusao, 15 brgys., 1,844 families or 9,920 persons; Dumarao, 3 brgys., 130 families or 520 persons; Dao, 20 brgys., 448 families or 2,712 persons; and Roxas City, 8 brgys., 197 families or 885 persons, and Tapaz, one family or five persons.
Towns that have not yet reported the number of families and persons affected are: Maayon, Cuartero and Jamindan, 7 brgys. each; Sapian, 5; and Ivisan, 4.
Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Violet Silva said the provincial government conducted relief operations for the affected families to augment the assistance received by the flood victims from their respective local governments.*
