Maasin mayor gets death threats
Security around Mayor Mariano Malones of Maasin, Iloilo has been stepped up after he received death threats.
Malones said one of the four letters sent to the municipal hall was addressed to him while the three others to Municipal Administrator Presencio Manejar, Executive Assistant Crisel Lope, and casual employee Christine Mae Cartagena.
Each typewritten note inside the envelope which read, “Condolence. Pabigat ka na sa lipunan,” came with a black ribbon.
According to what is written outside the envelope, the sender’s name is Mileto Gloria of Pagadian, Zamboanga del Sur.
The letter was sent from Murphy District Post Office in Quezon City last November 30.
Malones, for his part, said he is not afraid of the threats on his life.
“But I believe we should be given justice so that (whoever did it) will not get away with threatening public officials,” he said in Hiligaynon.
Malones said he has an idea who “Mileto Gloria” is, but he refused to name him, saying the incident has nothing to do with politics but with his personal engagement.
“It’s easy to see. It doesn’t involve politics. In my job at the municipal hall, I have stepped on other people’s toes,” he said.
Personal Security
Insp. Ariel Corcino, Maasin police station chief, said they have assigned a security detail to Malones.
They have also intensified monitoring of Malones activities as he is not just an ordinary official but the mayor of Maasin, he said.
Before the death threats, the mayor has no police security detail or even a personal bodyguard.*
